Formula Student

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

A warm welcome

to the Formula Student page of The Hochschule Niederrhein.

As part of the Formula Student racing series, international universities compete against each other with self-built cars on professional race tracks.

Founded in September 2011, the interdisciplinary team of students has been regularly taking part in races since 2012.

Even though the team has grown considerably in the meantime, we are always looking for motivated students who want to take part in this exciting project.

In addition to the technical tasks relating to the design and construction of the vehicle, there are also opportunities for students from other faculties to get involved in the organization.

General information

Formula Student was founded in 1981 in the USA by the name of Formula SAE. Over time, more and more countries have been added as venues. Since 2006, a race has also been held at the legendary Hockenheimring in Germany. Students design, build and market their own racing cars.

The unusual thing about this competition is that it is not simply the fastest car that wins, but a variety of other factors also play a major role. A basic distinction is made between the so-called "static events" and the "dynamic events".

The aim of Formula Student is clearly defined. Participation should be a supplement to studies. The aim is to gain intensive experience with design and production as well as with the economic aspects of automotive engineering.

Rules and disciplines

Formula SAE/Student is a design competition for students to develop a formula racing car to compete against other universities around the world.

The evaluation of the student racing cars is divided into two areas. On the one hand, there are the dynamic events, in which only the driving characteristics of the car play a role. On the other hand, there are the static events, where the aim is to sell oneself as professionally as possible.

Dynamic events:

  • Acceleration (75 points)
  • Skid-Pad (50 points)
  • Autocross (150 points)
  • Endurance (300 points)
  • Fuel Economy (100 points)

Static events:

  • Business Plan Presentation (75 points)
  • Engineering Design (150 points)
  • Cost Analysis (100 points)

Total score: 1000 points

Technical regulations for the car:

  • 4-stroke piston engine with maximum 610 cc
  • 20mm restrictor to limit the amount of engine air
  • Two separate brake systems
  • Min. wheelbase of 1525mm
  • Min. rim size of 8"
  • Roll bar and side impact protection
  • Five-point harness system

Sponsors are very welcome

In a Formula Student team, the students work just like in a company: Sponsors are sought to finance the project, parts and materials are purchased, trips are organized, financial planning and calculations are carried out, websites are maintained, etc.
