The doctorate gives our Master's students from the Textile Products and Management of Textile Trade and Technology degree programmes the opportunity to gain further qualifications following their studies with the aim of obtaining a doctorate.

Our diverse research areas cover the entire field of textile and Clothing Technology as well as related research fields and offer interested doctoral students a broad field of activity for their scientific work. We conduct research in many projects together with partners from industry and business, which means that our research work is very application-oriented.

The Doctoral College NRW offers doctoral candidates a topic-specific doctoral program, which is usually designed for 3 years.

A cooperative doctorate always takes place in cooperation with a university or a university of applied sciences that is authorized to award doctorates. The doctoral degree is awarded by the university or university of applied sciences. Our professors are equally involved in the doctoral process as supervisors, reviewers or examiners.

The doctoral college at our university provides doctoral students with an interdisciplinary central point of contact and coordination for their own doctorate.

Talk to our professors if you are interested in pursuing a doctorate. They will advise, support and put you in contact with a cooperating university or a university that is authorized to award doctorates.

Cooperative promotion

In principle, a cooperative doctorate is possible with any university or higher education institution in Germany or abroad that is authorized to award doctorates. Our professors provide support in making contact.

Our active partner universities include, for example

  • TU Dortmund
  • TU Dresden, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
  • Ruhr University Bochum
  • University of Ghent / Universiteit Gent
  • Université de Haute-Alsace, Mulhouse
  • RWTH, Faculty of Chemistry (DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials, Aachen)
  • University of Duisburg-Essen

Research topics

Smart textiles, textile logistics, composite materials, narrow textiles - this is just a small selection of the diverse research topics in the field of Textile and Clothing Technology. The research topics extend further into related subject areas such as microbiology or medicine.
The faculty's research activities are bundled in the Research Institute for Textile and Clothing (FTB). Students have the opportunity to actively participate in research topics as early as the Master's degree course, in research projects and/or with their master's thesis. This lays the foundation for further research leading to a doctorate.

Detailed information on research and an insight into current research topics can be found on the FTB website.
