5. semester projects

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

Team 9 - 2024

Home compostable clothing? We say it's possible!

As part of the 5th semester projects, our team, consisting of eleven students from Hochschule Niederrhein, worked on developing a textile end product made from home-compostable polylactide fibers.

The starting material, 4kg of PLA fibers, was provided by North Carolina State University.

Our goal was to produce a home-compostable garment with properties similar to conventional polyester, and over the course of the project we created a versatile collection of clothing and accessories.

In addition to the design and production of the end products, we also created our brand "PLAin" and developed marketing concepts aimed at interested customers.

Our collection shows that polylactide offers an alternative to conventional polyester. The possibility of home composting of defective or heavily worn clothing and accessories can reduce textile waste and thus relieve our environment in the future.
