How do students carry out chemistry experiments? Where do they do their research? What does it look like in a ceramics workshop? And what opportunities are there for budding designers to let off steam creatively? The Hochschule Niederrhein has the answers to these and many other questions: On Saturday, November 18, the Faculties of Chemistry (Adlerstraße 28-32) and Design (Frankenring 20) invite interested parties to take a look behind the scenes from 11 am to 5 pm. Both faculties can look back on over 100 years of tradition. Design training in Krefeld will even be celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2024.
A varied program awaits young visitors and their parents at the open day on the historic Krefeld West campus.
The chemists will be giving tours of the Faculty of Chemistry and the laboratories in the Biotechnology and Technical Chemistry departments. In addition to short lectures on the topics of "Chemistry makes people - cultural history of a love-hate relationship" and "Chemical raw materials from hard coal and coking plants", there will be plenty of hands-on activities in the open laboratories of Instrumental Analysis, Organic Chemistry and Paint Chemistry. Here, interested visitors can examine drinking water or microplastics, experiment with fragrances and produce a massage oil or mix paints professionally and learn how to coat on the automatic coating machine.
Visitors to the Faculty of Design can also find out how students learn and work productively here. In lectures, they will gain insights into design studies, the topic of motion design or design perspectives of the future. What the young people have already realized here is presented in exhibited works. These include prints, models, book covers and calendar concepts.
You can try things out for yourself in the printing, model making and screen printing workshop. There are also workshops on etching shellac plates, button design for children and 360-degree videos with VR glasses. Portfolio advisory services are also offered for the Product and Object Design and Communication Design degree programs. Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to chat with lecturers, students and alumni and enjoy refreshments in the café in the Shedhalle. Admission is free. The parking garage in Adlerstraße behind the Faculty of Chemistry buildings can be used free of charge.
