Hip-hop emerged 50 years ago from New York youth culture and has become an art form with global significance. Crises, social conflicts, social issues: Hip-hop transports, processes and deals with them. In the 1990s, migrant youths in Germany in particular found their medium in hip-hop to address racism. To mark the anniversary, the Forum Postmigrantische Perspektiven and other cooperation partners have invited several guests to look at a piece of this cultural history and its significance for youth cultures in the migration society. The Hochschule Niederrhein's Faculty of Applied Social Sciences is a cooperation partner of the forum.
The four events in 2023 will take place on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. in various locations in Mönchengladbach. Admission is free, registration is not required. On 22 November, sociologist Dr. Martin Seeliger from the University of Bremen will be our guest and will discuss gangsta rap in his lecture.
Following this (29 November), the film "Status YO!" from 2004 will be shown in the community center "Das Westend". The event will be introduced by professor Dr. Sascha Schierz, a sociologist from The Hochschule Niederrhein. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with director Till Hastreiter, moderated by Donja Amirpur, professor of migration education. The film screening is being organized in cooperation with the film series "Postmigrantische Audiovisionen" (concept: Prof. Dr. Ömer Alkin).
