The activities of the Graduate Institute NRW are increasing. On December 2, 2019, the first doctoral conference "Innovative Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency" took place in Düsseldorf. Three SWK E² employees, Charlotte Newiadomsky, Simon Möhren and Marius Madsen, presented and discussed their research results. Prof. Meyer moderated the second session.
Professor Meyer discussed the possible climate protection package with Prognos experts on September 18, 2019 in the run-up to the climate cabinet meeting in Berlin.
This year's symposium of the Federation of the German Food Industry (BVE) focused on water treatment, process water use and wastewater treatment in the food industry. Prof. Jörg Meyer moderated the event and Charlotte Newiadomsky gave a presentation on the effects of climate change on industrial water management.

Prof. Andreas Seeliger from SWK E2 took part in the 13th International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology ("Enerday 2019") at TU Dresden on 12.04.2019. He gave a presentation on the topic of "LNG from renewable sources as an alternative fuel for maritime shipping?". The presentation summarizes the initial findings of an article that is currently being written together with Bachelor graduate Tim Breuer.
Prof. Jörg Meyer moderated the first meeting of the second VDMA East Westphalia Energy Efficiency Network. After two successful years, the activities will now be continued for another two years at the request of the participants. New participants have been recruited for the network. The energy law framework conditions in Europe and Germany were the central topic of the event.
On November 4-5, 2019, Prof. Alsmeyer and our academic staff member Christian Schäfer took part in the annual conference of the ProcessNet specialist communities "Process, Apparatus and Plant Engineering" in Dortmund. Mr Schäfer presented research results from our Elmar project on the topic of modelling and optimization of energy systems.
The second meeting of the East Westphalia Energy Efficiency Network focused on energy efficiency projects and their funding opportunities. Prof. Meyer moderated the day and spoke about "Developments in the energy market and in energy policy". Current international topics included the upcoming COP25 climate protection conference in Chile and the IEA study "The Energy Progress Report". As no decisions relevant to the German mechanical and plant engineering industry have been made at EU level in recent months, the EU package "Clean energy for all EU citizens" was only briefly discussed. National topics such asCO2 pricing, the Climate Protection Act, the Energy Services Act (EDL-G) and the Building Energy Act (GEG) were then discussed.
Professor Meyer discussed globally successful projects and policy instruments with numerous experts and what we can learn from each other. In addition, Professor Meyer moderated the "Science" theme island with the key questions:
Prof. Andreas Seeliger took part in the 11th International Energy Economics Conference at the Vienna University of Technology from February 13 to 15. The conference was held under the motto "Freedom, Equality, Democracy: Blessing or Chaos for Energy Markets?". Prof. Seeliger gave a presentation on "Development of bureaucratic costs in the course of the German energy transition". The conference proceedings to be published will contain an article of the same name, which Prof. Seeliger wrote together with Master's student Max Grief.

On Monday, October 28, 2019, several companies from the beverage industry met at E.ON in Essen at the invitation of DENEFF and BVE. There, they discussed ways to increase Energy Efficiency in the companies. Prof. Jörg Meyer organized this event in his role as Deputy Chairman of the BVE's Environmental Committee and opened the discussion with his presentation "Important Trends for Energy Efficiency in the Beverage Industry".
The 3rd annual meeting of the Energy System Analysis research network took place in Aachen this year. Our institute members Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Alsmeyer and the academic staff Christian Schäfer and Raschad Damati presented a poster with current interim results on the publicly funded project "Generation and load management of waste incineration plants as a contribution to sector coupling" (ELMAR for short). The meeting was organized and hosted by Project Management Jülich on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The aims of the network are to expand the research field of energy system analysis, strengthen the networking of those involved and improve the transparency of research projects in this area.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Alsmeyer took part in the final event of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Mittlerer Niederrhein on April 9 as a member of the jury, at which apprentices present ideas and implementations for energy efficiency measures in their companies. A total of 27 apprenticeships from eight companies that took part in the "Energy Scouts" competition were honored.
From March 18 to 19, the SWK E² held a two-day workshop in Mönchengladbach. In addition to determining the future strategic direction of the institute, current research projects and courses were discussed. The academic staff working at SWK E² also had the opportunity to present their doctoral projects.
Networking between companies and universities
This year, the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein once again organized an event on the topic of efficiency innovators. The Hochschule Niederrhein, represented by the SWK E² Institute, showed itself to be a strong partner for SMEs, as it did last year, by facilitating cooperation between companies and the university.
Practical examples were shown and practical knowledge was imparted for the students' theses.
The event concluded with a tour of the SWK E² laboratories.
In Berlin, Professor Meyer emphasized the continued central role of an accelerated efficiency strategy that encompasses all sectors. Together with other experts, twelve concrete measures were proposed to the Federal Government.

Efficient energy transition now instead of waiting for green gas
Awareness of Energy Efficiency and energy management is increasing worldwide. At a conference in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, Prof. Jörg Meyer spoke on the topics of Energy Efficiency and Energy Management. He briefly explained German legislation in this area and its impact on industrial companies. This was followed by a discussion on the planned law on the mandatory introduction to energy management systems in accordance with ISO 50.001. Further specializations of the conference and discussions were the optimization of existing combined heat and power plants as well as the expansion of solar and wind power plants.
On January 19, 2019, the "Day of the Engineer" once again took place at The Hochschule Niederrhein between 9 am and 1 pm. Over 150 students presented the results of their study projects as part of an in-house exhibition in the J building. SWK E² was also represented again. Among other things, students presented a "hose pot" that prevents boiling over and a "multi-touch table" that allows variable settings for working with a touchscreen monitor.

This year's BVE symposium, organized by the Federation of the German Food Industry (BVE) and E.ON, focused on the opportunities of digitalization for a successful energy transition in the food industry. Prof. Jörg Meyer (SWK E²) moderated the event and presented the opportunities of the Internet of Things (IoT) for industrial companies in a specialist lecture.

Marius Madsen, academic staff member at SWK E², presented the results of two research projects dealing with efficient energy supply in a municipal environment at the iSEnEC 2018 conference. These are the KWK-Inno.Net Krefeld project ("KWK-Modellkommune") and the multi-year cooperation project with Stadtwerke Krefeld "Energiekataster".
Charlotte Newiadomsky, employee and doctoral student at SWK E², and Prof. Andreas Seeliger presented a joint research project at the 5th PhD Day at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences on February 21, 2018. As part of the poster session, interim results of the project entitled "How to choose an appropriate distribution scheme for water and energy" were presented.

Energy Efficiency Network meets at Clark Europe in Duisburg
The 3rd working meeting of the VDMA's Rhine-Ruhr Energy Efficiency Network, moderated by Prof. Jörg Meyer, took place on Tuesday, 18 . September in Duisburg. The main topic was lighting in production and buildings. Experts from more than ten companies discussed ways of making lighting more pleasant and energy-efficient (and therefore more cost-effective).
On June 19, 2018, the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein held an information event at The Hochschule Niederrhein in cooperation with the SWK E² Institute of The Hochschule Niederrhein.
Leading representatives from the business world, such as the companies Dietermann and Jones Lang LaSalle SE, as well as global players such as Siemens AG and the LVR, came together to report on their experiences of working with The Hochschule Niederrhein and to discuss the future development and implementation of projects.
"It is important for us to support the local economy with our specialist know-how and also to provide local companies with new specialists through our graduates," said Institute Director Prof. Dr.-Ing. He continues: "Of course, this works all the better if they have already seen the companies from the inside before graduating."
With combined heat and power plants, the heat generated can be used in addition to the electricity. This makes the systems more efficient than non-coupled systems. The lower fuel requirement results in lower CO2-emissions, which is why combined heat and power (CHP) can make an important contribution to the energy transition and support the achievement of the Paris Climate Agreement targets. The presentations will cover the possible applications of decentralized CHP to support the energy and heating transition. In addition, the SWK Energy Center E² of The Hochschule Niederrhein and Stadtwerke Krefeld (SWK AG) will present the research results from the KWK-Inno.Net Krefeld project on some of the lecture dates.

For the second time this year, employees and professors of the institute met for their regular strategy workshop.
Once again, topics such as new research ideas, the status of externally-funded projects, the future direction of the institute and planned publications, as well as topics relating to teaching education and doctorates were discussed.
The regular meetings are also used for intensive professional exchange, which is sometimes neglected in normal day-to-day business.
The next workshop is planned for the beginning of 2019.

Press event with SWK E² - CHP model municipality project - district solution for retirement home and adjoining buildings
At the end of April, the project partners of the KWK-Inno.Net Krefeld project (City of Krefeld, Stadtwerke Krefeld and The Hochschule Niederrhein) met for the inauguration of the new mini combined heat and power plant at the retirement home on Quartelkämpchen. In addition to the project partners, Michael Geßner, Head of the Energy Department at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitization and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and Sabine Schneider from the EnergyAgency.NRW, who is responsible for the CHP/local and district heating network, the NRW CHP model municipalities control centre and municipal and regional climate protection and climate change, were also present.

On January 27, 2018, the "Day of the Engineer" took place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Hochschule Niederrhein. As part of this event, over 150 students presented the results of their study projects at an in-house exhibition in the J building.
SWK E² was of course also represented. Among other things, students presented a vortex tube construction in the technical center, a simulation model of German distribution grids and an energy-efficient control system for domestic heating pumps.

Energy Efficiency Network meets at Boge-Kompressoren in Bielefeld
The 7th working meeting of the VDMA's Energy Efficiency Network, moderated by Prof. Jörg Meyer, took place on Thursday, August 30 in Bielefeld. The main topics were energy data management systems and DC grids in production and buildings.
At the end of March, Prof. Meyer, Prof. Wang and our academic staff member Christian Schäfer made the long journey to China to take part in the opening of the "Sino-German Intelligent Cold Chain Logistics Institute" in cooperation with Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST). Following the opening speeches, also by Prof. Meyer, the contract for the first concrete research project "Sino-German Green Energy Efficiency" under the direction of Prof. Wang was signed.
During the course of the trip, it was possible to visit the new Shulan Hospital building, for which SWK E² is investigating various measures to increase Energy Efficiency, such as the use of a cold storage system.
