In general, textiles (e.g. dish towels, industrial wiping cloths, laundry bags) absorb moisture during usage and act as nutrient media for microorganisms (such as bacteria or fungi). The growth of microorganisms can lead to the formation of odor and volatile substances. To prevent this, frequent washing and high amounts of cleaning agents are commonly used. Release of washing agents can be harmful to the environment and poses a risk to aquatic life. The development of chitosan-containing recipes to finish textiles will greatly reduce odor formation and thus the number of necessary washing cycles of the textiles. This minimize as well as the environmental and health impacts expected from the use of detergents. This project is funded by Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM) from funds of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) based on a decision of the German Parliament [Reference Number: KK5163005PK1].
